Curricula in Thailand — at a glance
Counts from CredRadar's dataset, 2026-10-06; a school offering two systems is counted in each.

2 · British (IGCSE / A Level)
The default in Thailand — the largest group in our dataset, from Bangkok Patana and Shrewsbury down to small primaries. Strengths: a transparent exam ladder, deep subject teaching, and A Levels that every university system on earth can read. Watch-outs: specialisation comes early (a student weak in a dropped subject can't recover it), and "British curriculum" spans everything from rigorously inspected schools to marketing labels — check for Cambridge/Edexcel exam-centre status and BSO or equivalent inspection. 3 · IB (PYP / MYP / DP / CP)
The IB is a programme framework, not a nationality: schools must be authorised by the IB Organisation for each programme they offer (verify any school on ibo.org — see our accreditation guide). Thailand's IB schools range from full PYP–DP through-schools to DP-only sixth forms. Strengths: breadth, research and writing skills, and a diploma universities worldwide understand. Watch-outs: the DP is a heavy two-year load, and MYP-only or candidate schools are sometimes marketed as if fully authorised. Browse IB schools in Bangkok.
4 · American (US diploma / AP)
Built around a credit-accumulating diploma and GPA, with Advanced Placement courses as the honours track. Strengths: flexibility, continuous assessment instead of one exam season, and a natural fit for US admissions. Watch-outs: diplomas are only as credible as the school's accreditation (look for WASC or Cognia — membership of a US-flavoured association is not the same), and AP breadth varies hugely between schools. 5 · The other systems
Canadian (including Ontario OSSD pathways), Australian, Singapore, French (AEFE network), German-Swiss, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Indian-curriculum schools all operate in Thailand, mostly in Bangkok. They serve their national communities first but are rarely closed to others; the practical filter is the language of instruction. All appear, labelled, in the directory.
6 · How families actually choose
Three questions decide it for most families: (1) Where might your child study next? — match the diploma to the likely destination system. (2) How does your child respond to exams vs continuous assessment? — A Level/IGCSE concentrates risk in exam seasons; the American model spreads it; the DP spreads it but never lets up. (3) How long will you stay? — short postings favour the system of the next country, not this one. Then use the finder quiz and compare tool on the schools that fit.
7 · FAQ
Which curriculum is best for US university applications?
An American diploma with AP courses is the direct route, but IB Diploma and A Level results are fully recognised by US universities. What matters more is the school's actual results and counselling record — ask for its matriculation list.
Can my child switch from British to IB (or the reverse) mid-way?
Yes, most easily at natural break points (start of secondary, start of the two-year exam courses at 14/16). Switching mid-course (e.g. mid-IGCSE or mid-DP) is where credit and content gaps bite; schools assess for exactly this.
Is the IB only for academic high-flyers?
The IB Diploma is demanding, but the IB also offers the Career-related Programme (CP), and schools choose how many DP subjects to require. Judge by the school's value-added and completion rates, not the logo.
Are single-nationality curricula (French, German, Japanese) open to other nationalities?
Generally yes — the Lycée Français, the German-Swiss school, the Japanese and Korean schools in our directory all admit other nationalities, but instruction is in the national language, which is the real filter.
